ABSTRACT

India is endowed with some of the world’s finest buffalo germplasm. Indian buffaloes are comparatively more efficient than cattle and are a major source of income for the rural households. Time and again, several initiatives have been taken by central and state governments and various institutions to improve buffalo population of the country, however there are constraints that remain to be addressed. A multi pronged strategy involving strengthening the semen production, adoption of assisted reproductive techniques, boosting milk processing and community based initiatives, needs to be devised so that buffalo farming yields greatest economic dividends to the rural households.
