ABSTRACT

Practice of rearing calf independent of mother is weaning. Weaning surmounts problems like over and underfeeding of milk, udder-teat injury and unclean milk. Two stages weaning (nose flap/ fence line) are superior over traditional weaning. Weaning divided into different categories: batch, pasture, corral/feedlot and late type. Weaning in corral requires feed bunk along the fence to minimize peripheral walking and increase attraction to food-water. In late weaning weakening cow-calf bond utilized. Dam separated from calf rather vice-versa. Castration, dehorning, de-worming should be earlier to avoid additional stress during weaning. Good shelter, minerals and high fiber prepares calf to fight weaning-stress.
