It is believed that smearing of dung of cow and its progeny in the form of a thin layer on the mud floor and walls of houses not only keeps them clean but also acts as antiseptic, fungicide, vermicide, insecticide, and fly repellent. Such effects have not been observed using buffalo dung even if these are reared under similar set of conditions of feeding and management. The scientific explanations on this aspect still remain wanting.
