India’s dairy sector has achieved remarkable growth, emerging as the world’s largest milk producer. However, sustaining this progress requires comprehensive policy interventions addressing productivity, breed improvement, animal health, nutrition, infrastructure, and market development. This paper examines key constraints affecting dairy development and proposes strategies for enhancing milk production, procurement, processing, and marketing. Emphasis is placed on strengthening artificial insemination, promoting sex-sorted semen, improving feed and fodder availability, expanding milk-handling infrastructure, and encouraging value-added dairy products. It also highlights the importance of quality control, cooperative reforms, public-private partnerships, farmer welfare, and coordinated institutional support for sustainable dairy development.
