ABSTRACT

Geographical Indications (GIs) play a crucial role in preserving the authenticity, heritage, and economic value of traditional products, particularly in India, where dairy farming holds significant cultural and economic importance. This review presents the characteristics, traditional methods, and socio-economic impacts of several recently GI-tagged Indian dairy products, such as Banaras Lal Peda, Tripura Matabari Peda, Udhampur Kaladi, Kendrapara Rasabali, and Arunachal Pradesh Yak Churpi. These products represent diverse regional traditions influenced by climate, locally available raw materials, and traditional practices. GI tagging safeguards these culinary treasures from imitation and enhances their global recognition, thereby fostering sustainable livelihoods for local communities. The review highlights the role of traditional methods—such as open-pan cooking, firewood stoves, and sun-drying—in maintaining the unique characteristics of these dairy products. By linking these products to their geographical origins, GI tagging reinforces India's rich cultural heritage and creates new opportunities for global market expansion.
