ABSTRACT

Milk is the secretion of mammary glands of mammals. It contains many different nutrients which offer a range of health benefits. Besides a good balance of protein, fat and carbohydrate it contains essential nutrients like calcium, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium, zinc, riboflavin, vitamins A, and B12. All these nutrients are essential for sustaining life and maintaining good health. Nutritionists recommend that milk should be consumed daily as part of a balanced diet. According to Ayurveda, milk is said to provide unique nutrition that cannot be provided by any other type of food. Milk promotes ‘ojas’ a pure substance that is accumulated from properly digested food. Ojas brings strength, strong immunity, happiness and contentment. Milk when digested properly, nourishes all the tissues and promotes balanced emotions. It is mentioned in one of verses as: “Milk is beneficial for healthy individuals; by drinking milk one does not get diseases; hence there is no better aphrodisiac than milk; there is no better life-prolonger than milk.”
