ABSTRACT

India comprises of 29 states and seven union territories, of which six states and two union territories constitute the northern region of India. A large number of people in the northern states are earning their livelihood through the rearing of livestock especially, cattle and buffaloes. Various livestock improvement programmes are being conducted by state governments in the northern India to increase the income of farmers through livestock rearing. There is need of breed prioritization, promotion of indigenous cattle, human skill development and adoption of new technologies for cattle and buffalo improvement in order to yield the greatest benefit to the farmers of northern states of India.
