ABSTRACT

India is the rich repository of goat genetic resources with 28 recognized breeds with higher proportion of the non-descriptive or mixed breeds. The poor man’s cow i.e. goat has tremendous potential to be projected as the ‘Future Animal’ for the rural and landless farmers under the changing agro-climatic conditions and diminishing resources in India. Therefore, the proper breeding strategy needs to be adopted after recognizing those forces that drives goat production system for high productivity in India.
