Most of the commercial dairy farmers maintain the crossbreds of Holstein Friesian or Jersey in their farms due to high milk yields. There are also many commercial buffalo farms being set up in recent years based entirely on high yielding buffalo breeds such as Murrah especially in the vicinity of cities. Besides the maintenance of high yielding animals, the farmers are also breeding these dairy animals for sale in the market. Considerable proportion of dairy farms is integrated with value addition of milk, bio-gas production, direct marketing and preparation of products from dung and urine which helps to fetch high income, reduce cost and eliminate the middlemen. There is a need to incentivise the farmers with credit, insurance, training; facilitating other inputs; market for animal sale and product sale as well as strengthening farmers groups at cluster level so as to enable the sustainability and profitability of commercial dairy farms in the country.
