Providing a balanced ration to the animals is not always easy due to diversified farming systems and climatic conditions existing in different parts of the country. As per the various feeding standards, to maximize the milk yield the ration must contain 25% of DM as green fodder of superior quality. The ideal dry matter content in the silage is around 35% when it is cut at the flowering stage. The best silages are soft, have high moisture, and have their characteristic aroma.
