Since India being an agrarian society and a very ancient civilization, historical proofs have been found that milch animals have always been given very high importance in daily life. Since the time of Lord Krishna, Cow has always been treated with a very high esteem and considered equivalent to mother god. The cow milk was treated at par with AMRUT. The article discusses about various breeds of cow and buffalo viz. Indigenous Dairy Breeds of Cattles, Indigenous Draught Breeds of Cattle, Indigenous Dual-purpose Breeds of Cattle, Exotic Dairy Breeds of Cattle, Prominent Cross bred Cattle Developed in India and Buffalo breeds (Indigenous Buffalo Breeds).
