Geographical Indication (GI) is a sign used on goods that have specific origin and possess unique quality, characteristics and reputation. Any product in category of natural product, agricultural product, a food item or a manufactured product which is unique and special to a particular region, can seek GI protection. Protection under GI provides legal status to the consumer goods and also prevents the customer from forgery. This article explores the potential of traditional dairy-based products for their protection under Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act which may help in economic upliftment of producers of such products and may also provide GI protection in other countries.
