ABSTRACT

Nutrigenomics is the emerging field in the life sciences area. Nutrigenomics focuses primarily on the association between various diet and gene expression. The fundamental concept of nutrigenomics is that a healthy phenotypic characteristic may slowly develop into a disease phenotype through alterations in the expression of genes or epigenetic phenomena because the diet contains substances having the potential to modify these processes. From the perspective of nutrigenomics, bioactive food constituents (mostly in functional foods) are the dietary signals and genes are considered to be the dietary targets. Nutrigenomics analyzes the reaction of various bioactive food constituents on protein expression, transcription factors and metabolic profile. It is recognized that human diseases are mostly preventable by lifestyle changes. This makes nutrigenomics to have a foremost position in preventive medicine.
