The livestock sector in India has come up asa key drivers to agricultural growth. It contributes 28.7 percent to the agricultural GDP and 4.1 percent of the national GDP. However, the nutrient rich and high moisture livestock produces pose food safety threats and affects the health and regulatory considerations. Numerous issues related to the livestock product refusal have been came across in the past because of food safety and health standards (SPS and TBT measures) that have impacted trade. Keeping in view, this paper summarizes export potential of Indian livestock sector, the findings of the past studies on the impact of food safety standards on access of Indian livestock product to international markets, trade losses resulting from stringent standards, specific hindrances in meeting food safety requirements and possible policy solutions for the developing country intending trade.
