ABSTRACT

Somatic cells are mainly milk-secreting epithelial cells that have been shed from the lining of the gland and white blood cells (leukocytes), and entered the mammary gland in response to injury or infection. Somatic cell count (SCC) is widely used throughout the world to predict the health status of udder quarters in milch animals, the suitability of milk for human consumption and monetary losses to the producers due to mastitis. Increased Somatic cells indicate intramammary infection. Continuous monitoring of SCC in milk at farm level through the use of onsite test kits can be a good indicator for checking quality of milk.
