Livestock are dependent upon weather for their comfort, productivity, fodder etc. More than 80 percent of the milk production comes from the unorganized sectors as part of integrated farming system comprising of crop production and animal husbandry. Adverse weather conditions can cause severe production losses, especially if experienced during critical stages of growth, lactation and reproduction causing severe economic losses to individual farmers and to the national economy. Individually and combinations of meteorological elements occurring simultaneously can have additive effects on animal production, reproduction and diseases. Timely forecast of expected adverse meteorological conditions and advice to the farmers/ livestock owners on steps to be taken for minimizing adverse impacts on livestock performance can significantly contribute towards stabilizing and enhancing income of individual farmers and towards national economy.
