ABSTRACT

Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is one of the most contagious diseases of cloven-footed animals with a potential of causing severe economic losses and trade disruptions in animals and their products. After Second World War, the disease was widely distributed throughout the world. In India, the disease is endemic and causes up to 100% morbidity with fatality rate up to 5%. Disease is a threat for approximately 470 million domestic livestock of India. As there is no specific treatment for FMD, the core of prevention and control of FMD in India lies in prophylactic vaccination of susceptible animals, management of outbreaks and symptomatic treatment of infected animals.
